Male Hair Loss
Male hair loss is far more common than
female hair loss. It is also called androgenetic
alopecia. Males who develop this kind of hair loss will
typically notice their hairline begins to recede
and notice thinning hair on top.
Scientists have concluded that male pattern hair loss is
often caused by genetics and a hormone imbalance. It presents
itself after the hair follicle thins, which stunts the hair’s
growth. After a while, the hair of the shrunken follicle will
cease to grow altogether.
A man losing his hair might notice:
• Patches of hair gone
• Hair falling out
• Hair breaking easily
• Receding hairline in a “u” shape
It is important to note that not all hair loss in males is
caused by androgenetic alopecia. Other diseases and disorders
can also lead to hair loss. A doctor’s further analysis is
needed if the man notices any flaking, redness, or pain on the
scalp, or other symptoms of an illness.
Hair loss and thinning hair have been sensitive issues for
men throughout time. Recently, medical science has finally
identified the main cause of hair loss. Now, it is a known
medical fact that hair loss stems from both genetic and
hormonal causes. Androgenetic Alopecia or "male pattern hair
loss" is implicated in 95% of hair loss cases. The key is a
hormonal byproduct called DHT
(dihydrotestostrone). The more DHT that gets put into your
body, the more your hair follicles become thinner and finer
until the hair is permanently lost.
DHT is one of many male hormones in the body. DHT is
developmentally important early in a man’s life; however, it
appears to be a cause of hair loss as men get older.
Provillus blocks DHT (dihydrotestostrone) from
getting to your body, which is one of the major causes of hair
loss. The breakthrough formula of Provillus was
designed to block DHT and supply the proper nutrients to
your body specifically tailored to prevent hair loss and to
help you regrow hair naturally.
Men who do have genetic hair loss problems have a few
different treatment options. Minoxidil is very common, and is sold as
“Rogaine” in many places. It does not lead
to new hair growth for every male, but some will be lucky
enough to see their hair come back. Most men will see a
slowdown in the amount of hair lost.
Finasteride (Propecia) is a medication that
slows down dihydrotestosterone production in the male body.
This is a hormone that can contribute to male pattern baldness.
Finasteride has often been found to be more effective than
minoxidil. Note that it is not for females because it can lead
to birth defects.
Sadly, upon stopping either medication the hair loss will
return. Men wishing to keep their hair will need to maintain a
prescription to either minoxidil or finasteride. This can get
quite expensive, which is why it is important to evaluate
whether such treatments are desired.
Some men who don’t see enough improvement, or would rather
not use medications, opt for hair transplants.
Doctors can take areas of hair that still have excellent growth
and move them to areas that are no longer growing. It is
possible to retrieve the look of a full head of hair with these
procedures.
There are several other products on the market that are
tailored toward men losing their hair as well. Some of these
focus on replenishing vitamins or
restoring hormonal balance back to the body.
Individual success with such treatments varies greatly, so it’s
important to weight different options as a patient.
If males experiencing baldness or hair loss do nothing, there
is certainly nothing wrong with that option. Many men live with
baldness and it just becomes a natural look for those men.
However, if one notices decreasing self-esteem or depression it
is necessary to seek treatment as soon as possible.
Male hair loss is not a serious medical
condition, and is more cosmetic in nature. Losing hair is a way
of life for many men and it can certainly be frustrating.
Thankfully, there are treatments available for men who are
self-conscious about losing their hair and they can be
effective at halting hair loss.
